Germany is becoming a new option for students

Study Abroad: Germany is becoming a new option for students in the midst of expensive studies abroad, see full details here

Study Abroad: There is big news for the youth who dream of studying abroad. Due to the sharp depreciation of the rupee, now studying abroad has become expensive. The cost of education in America has increased from 1.5 to 2 lakh rupees per year. Not only the depreciation of the rupee, but also due to the increase of 10 to 20 percent in tuition fees in the US, UK and Australia, now studying abroad has become expensive. The increase in airfares is also another reason behind expensive education abroad. Also, airfares have also increased in the recent times, adding to the burden on students studying abroad.

Foreign study becomes costly due to depreciation of rupee

Countries like US, UK, Canada and Australia have not approved visas of lakhs of Indian students which has added to the problem. There is a lot of delay in getting student visas, while students whose visas have been approved are facing inflation due to the depreciating rupee. Indian students living abroad are also facing difficulty in finding accommodation due to the rise in the prices of hostels and homestays. But Germany seems to be benefiting from this delay in the approval of student visas by other countries.

German government gives subsidy on education

According to a recent report by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the number of Indian students studying in Germany increased from 17,570 in 2017 to 34,134 in 2021. The increase in student numbers was because the German government subsidizes education. All international students studying at a state funded university in Germany do not have to pay tuition fees. This is one of the biggest benefits for international students in Germany and can act as a big relief for Indian students amidst expensive education in other popular countries.

Though various courses are available for Indian students at a low cost in countries like Germany, students do not change their preferences easily. He prefers to study only in countries like America, Australia. Sumit Jain, co-founder of Yoket, a community-based platform for overseas studies, says that due to the depreciation of the rupee, the average additional cost of studies in the US has increased by Rs 1.5 to 2 lakh per year. Despite this, students do not take decisions without comprehensively evaluating various aspects.

Changing choice of students due to delay in visa

For students who want to do post research, there is no point in going to other countries, on the other hand many students keep their options open. Many students choose the United States for STEM courses while they choose United and Australia for non-STEM courses. While earlier countries like US, UK, Australia and Canada were the first choice of students, due to delay in visa, now countries like Germany, Spain, France, Portugal and UAE have emerged as the preferred destinations for higher education.

Significantly, the Covid-19 pandemic has proved to be a major obstacle for students who wish to pursue higher education abroad. In the US and some European countries, students are getting a waiting period of one to two years for visas. It simply means that an Indian student enrolling in a US university will be able to get a US visa after a year or two. According to industry experts, the number of Indian students going to countries like the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand stood at around one million at the beginning of 2022, almost double the level before the pandemic. Similarly, the number of visa applications has increased significantly more than before, due to which the visa approval is now getting delayed.
